President

Name: Alex Doo '11
Blurb: It's been an amazing year for Scholars Society, and I've learned a lot from my experience as president this year. Our numbers have grown, we've continued traditions from last year (Grunion Run, Junkyard Derby, Relay for Life) and started some new ones (Row for the Cure, End-of-the-Quarter Potlucks), and it's been a pleasure working with all of you on projects such as the OSP and Banquet. Next year will be an exciting and challenging one for our club with the Inter-UC Conference on the way and hopefully our first Overnight Stay Program, as well as more involvement from the Alumni Office and our faculty advisor, Dr. Frank. I hope to continue to contribute to our group, use my experience from this year, and help us gain more recognition if I am re-elected president.

VP:Development

Blurb: Hey everyone! My name is James Zhang and I'm a freshman Human Biology major at Revelle. I am running for the position of VP:Development and hope that everyone will support me! There are a couple of reasons why you should vote for me. First, I am a hardworking and diligent individual; also, if elected as a VP:Development next year, I promise to listen to and consider input/feedback from all members of the UCSD Scholars Society. Furthermore, one of the main tasks that the VP:Development will be responsible for next year includes establishing and making sure the Overnight Stay Program is up and running. This year, I was a member of the OSP committee and was very active in organizing the event. Because of this, I have experience in planning and will do everything I can to make sure the program is a huge success next year! I sincerely hope that all of you will vote for me as VP:Development and look forward to working with all of you next year! Thanks!

Blurb: As Co-VP Development, I would like to help grow Scholar’s Society by pushing through programs such as the Overnight Stay Program. While it was unfortunate that we could not hold the program this year, I will do my best to make sure that it will succeed next year. I think I am fit for the job because, having led the effort this year, I know exactly what is needed in terms of planning and logistics. Other things I’d like to do include trying to help connect members to different academic opportunities such as research and internships as well as planning academic events such as graduate school info sessions.

VP Internal

Blurb: I’m glad I’ve had the opportunity to work with scholars society as VP External for the past year. I’ve gained a lot of experience in organizing events and building relationships. I hope to have more social events next year as well as to develop our current traditions, such as grunion run, junk yard derby and hopefully some more intramural sports as well. I’ve also had experience attending both inter UC conferences so I am very excited in helping to organize the conference here in UCSD next year.

Blurb: As a member of the Scholars Society this past year, I participated in many events, with the Halloween Haunted Trail being one of my favorites, and helped plan some of them, including the potential Overnight Stay Program and the Scholars Banquet. The events were a chance for me to spend time with my friends and meet new ones, and I want to help make sure next year's Scholars Society experience will be even more fun that it already was this year. Through continuing our traditional events as well as finding other exciting ones, I wish to both strengthen the friendships established this year and draw in more member participation to extend the network of friends within the Scholars Society.

VP External
Name: Naudereh Noori '10

Blurb: As the Scholar Society VP External for the past 3 years, I have been able to gain a sense of what it takes to be a part of running this organization. I have created volunteer opportunities and promoted scholar involvement by coordinating and leading various community service projects, such as Relay for Life. I have also enjoyed planning and organizing various other Scholars Society projects, such as the Senior End of Year Banquet for the last 2 years. If given the opportunity to serve in this position again next year, I have improvements and additions I would like to accomplish. In particular, I believe that there is more that can be done to improve interactions between UCSD alumni and current scholars. For example, it would be nice to set up a mentor-mentee system between alumni and students, and hold informal meetings to promote a venue during which students can seek advice. I would like to continue to be a part of running and improving Scholars’ Society, and would love to serve as your VP External again, and would greatly appreciate your vote!

Blurb: The prime responsibility of a VP External is to integrate our Scholars Society with the greater UCSD community through volunteerism. To this extent, my enthusiasm for the position, coupled with my experience in volunteering and leadership, can prove to be an asset for our organization. In high school, I served as president of the Service Club and devoted 500+ hours to volunteering. As Co-VP External, I want to channel this familiarity with volunteer opportunities into promoting new venues where Scholars can volunteer their time and, of course, have fun while at it.

Inter-Campus Liason
Name: Tim Scheffelin '11

Blurb: I am applying for the position of inter-campus liason because I feel that the intercampus events organized each year have been both worthwhile and fun. I also am willing to put in the significant amount of time necessary to plan and coordinate the Inter-UC conference next year.

Treasurer
Name: Sowmya Arja '11

Blurb: Hey scholars! My name is Sowmya Arja and I am running for treasurer. I’ve been an active member of Scholars’ Society for two years now, and have been treasurer this past year. I believe I bring experience, enthusiasm, and motivation to the table as a candidate for this position. I hope to help the Scholars’ Society have another successful year in terms of budget as well as everything else that this organization involves!

Secretary/ Historian
Name: Yasuno Sato '10

Blurb: As the Secretary/ Historian, I would keep a record of all activities and meetings, inform all members about upcoming events, provide support for fellow officers, and work on the new website with the Webmaster. I am very neat and organized, so I guarantee that if anyone wants to know what happened during meetings or wants to take a look at pictures, they would be easy to find. I would also like to help out other officers with planning, organizing or anything else they need, because I know it is sometimes difficult to do everything alone. Since I have been the secretary this year, I know that I’ll be able to use my experiences and connections with the Alumni Association for the coming year.

Webmaster
Name: Jennifer Vo '11

Blurb: As webmaster, I plan to revamp the website's layout to optimize functionality and ease in maintaining up-to-date content. I want to encourage Scholars to take advantage of the Internet's ability to connect people's lives, whether that is by forging a network amongst Scholars or between Scholars and various other groups (including alumni). I desire for Scholars to see the unique resource our website has the potential to be and to be excited to visit it regularly for information on new events, forum discussions, and all of the Scholars Society's exciting endeavors.
